Reimagining Lincolnshire is invites you to explore Lincoln in a new way through a series of digital trails that uncover hidden and overlooked stories from across the county.

Using your smartphone, these location-based experiences connect you with the people, places and histories that have shaped the city. Blending audio, augmented reality and digital storytelling, each trail offers a different perspective on Lincoln, revealing stories that are often missing from traditional narratives.

Five digital trails will be launched across the city, creating new ways to engage with Lincoln’s heritage whenever you visit. Whether you are following voices from the past, encountering stories in unexpected places, or discovering new layers of familiar streets, each trail is designed to be accessible, immersive and thought-provoking.

On Saturday 25th April, historian and campaigner Professor Heather Hughes delivered an illustrated talk celebrating the stories of lesser-known Lincolnshire women who campaigned for equality and helped shape the rights many enjoy today. From early reform movements through to the fight for women’s suffrage and beyond, the session explores the determination and activism that helped drive social change.

 

In October, we led a creative workshop at Lincoln Museum for 12–17-year-olds, inviting participants to respond to artworks from The Usher Gallery through art and writing. The session encouraged young people to explore Lincolnshire’s history, reflect on whose stories are represented or missing, and share their own perspectives. .

The Lincoln Pride Zine Workshop, led by Thomas Cansdale, engaged 203 participants and
provided an interactive platform for exploring Lincolnshire’s hidden queer histories.
Communities responded to the questions about the past and their experiences now, through conversations and contributing to the collective Zine.

The Zine can now be found in the Lincoln Uni Library.

FlightPaths: An immersive audio-visual trail by Electric Egg

FlightPaths is a new free, immersive audio-visual trail by Electric Egg launching as part of the Reimagining Lincolnshire project. It is designed to shine a light on overlooked histories and under-represented voices from the region, beginning with Lincolnshire’s significant role during the Second World War.

During the war, Lincolnshire’s flat agricultural landscape made it an ideal location for the construction of airfields as the Royal Air Force rapidly expanded while the threat of conflict loomed. Much as Kent became synonymous with Fighter Command and the Battle of Britain, Lincolnshire would come to be known as Bomber County. The county’s wartime legacy remains woven into the landscape: disused control towers, fragments of perimeter tracks and solitary Nissen huts sit quietly in fields and hedgerows, reminders that the past is never far away. Yet even within this well-remembered history, there are many stories still to be heard. Using the Echoes Explorer app, FlightPaths activates audio clips and soundscapes in real time as you move through the city, uncovering personal accounts, training stories and lived experiences linked to Bomber Command.

On Friday 16th February, we were joined by 90 audience members for Healing Histories: Life at The Lawn, an evening exploring the layered histories of The Lawn Hospital, a place that had been a site of treatment, restraint, and reform.

The event was made up of a talk by Nigel Horner, student research, creative responses, and community perspectives to reflect on how mental health care has evolved and the human stories that shape it today.

Reimagining Lincolnshire is a new project led by Threshold in partnership with the University of Lincoln, and made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.  Thanks to National Lottery players, Reimagining Lincolnshire will connect community audiences and visitors with the social histories of Lincoln.

Through creative commissions, workshops and digital storytelling, the project invites communities, artists and historians to impact Lincolnshire’s heritage and reframe how it is remembered. Stories will then feature in a new series of digital trails across Lincoln and in a new online public archive.
